Programmes

TCCA offers two post-secondary programmes:
Bachelor of Theology degree (B.Th.)
Diploma of Theology (Dip.Th.)

Students also participate in the Field Education Programme, which provides an opportunity for practical ministry. These programmes are operated on a residential basis and are open to men and women called of God and affirmed by their local church, with the necessary prerequisites for post-secondary studies. There is also a non-accredited programme for the wives of students.

Bachelor of Theology

  • The four-year Bachelor of Theology Programme is designed to fulfil the Purpose and Objectives of the College for students who are capable of study at the bachelor degree level. This programme is primarily intended for those who anticipate entering full-time Christian service, serving as local church pastors, Christian education workers, denominational leaders, Religious Education teachers, parachurch workers, chaplains, missionaries, etc.

  • Note: Although the B.Th. degree is usually sufficient preparation for entry into post-graduate studies, students anticipating further studies are advised to inquire directly of other institutions regarding their admission requirements. Our graduates have been accepted into post-graduate programmes at the Universities of Aberdeen, Birmingham and Trinity College (Bristol) in the United Kingdom; the Universities of Stellenbosch, UNISA and KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa; Nairobi Evangelical Graduate School of Theology and Daystar University in Kenya; and such American institutions as Wheaton Graduate School, Asbury Theological Seminary, Reformed Theological Seminary, Harvard University and Boston University.

  • The academic requirements for graduation with a Bachelor of Theology degree consist of 180 credit hours of courses, which must include the following:
    • All “required” courses (see Part B below);
    • At least 52 credit hours of biblical studies which, in addition to the required courses must include at least 10 credit hours in OT and 9 credit hours in NT courses;
    • At least 17 credit hours of theology courses;
    • At least 6 credit hours of history courses;
    • At least 4 credit hours of spirituality courses; and
    • A 15 credit hour internship.

  • The purpose of the internship, which normally takes place during the second term of the fourth year, is to give students the opportunity of experiencing the type of ministry/teaching situation they expect to be in after graduation, and to learn from this experience. It involves a ministry/ teaching assignment of approximately 45 hours per week over the 12-week term, which must be closely supervised and evaluated. Students are responsible for arranging their own internship which may take place anywhere within the country. If foreign students choose an assignment outside the country, they must pay an extra fee to provide for the transport of a faculty member to visit. Those intending to be R.E. teachers will be required to do a teaching practicum in a secondary school.

  • In addition, a major in Pastoral Studies, Education ('B.Th. with Ed.') or Missions will be awarded if the student completes all the courses prescribed for that major. Otherwise, the student's major will be “General Studies”.

Diploma of Theology

The three-year Diploma of Theology programme is also designed to fulfil the Purpose and Objectives of the College, but at an academic level which is less demanding than the Bachelor of Theology programme. The Dip.Th. programme also prepares students for full-time Christian service in the same variety of contexts as the B.Th. degree. In fact, Diploma students share many of the same classes with B.Th. students; however, assignments will be different, fewer, or graded less rigorously.

Note: The Dip.Th. is usually not sufficient qualification for entry into a bachelor or a post-graduate programme of studies. Therefore, we strongly encourage applicants to upgrade their “O” levels and apply for entry into the B.Th. programme, if they anticipate the possibility of further studies.

The academic requirements for graduation with a Diploma of Theology consist of 135 credit hours of courses, which must include the following:

• All “required” courses (see Part B below);
• At least 40 credit hours of biblical studies which, in addition to the required courses, must include at least 7 credit hours in OT and 9 credit hours in NT courses;
• At least 17 credit hours of theology courses;
• At least 6 credit hours of history courses; and
• At least 4 credit hours of spirituality courses.

A 5-credit hour internship is available as an option to Dip.Th. students. This will normally take place within Ndola during the April or August break of the student's third year; the Academic Dean must approve exceptions to this. An internship may be taken during a regular term in lieu of non-required courses; internships taken outside Ndola may involve added expense to the student. Those intending to be R.E. teachers will be assigned a teaching practicum in a local school.

In addition, a major in Pastoral Studies, Education ('Dip.Th. with Ed.') or Missions will be awarded if the student completes all the courses prescribed for that major. Otherwise, the student's major will be “General Studies”.

Wives Programme

The College is committed to equipping husbands and wives to work together in ministry for the following purposes:

• to make their ministry more effective;

• to strengthen their own marriage relationship; and

• to provide a model of marriage and ministry for others to follow.

Therefore, whenever it is possible, we encourage the wives of students to participate in studies while they are at the College. For those who do not have the academic qualifications for, or interest in, either of the accredited programmes, TCCA offers a series of studies that we call the Wives Programme. The purpose of this programme is to prepare the wives spiritually, mentally, and socially for future ministry.

This programme usually consists of four courses each term, each one having one hour of class time per week. Some examples of courses offered are as follows:
• Biblical Studies (a book of the Bible)
• Christian Ministry (a subject, such as counselling, evangelism, etc.)
• Leadership in Literacy (learning English reading and writing skills and the ability to teach the same to others)
• Practical Living (e.g., gardening, sewing, cooking, women’s health, etc.)

Those who complete this programme should be able to:
• Demonstrate knowledge of the Word of God and its application in all of life
• Lead small group Bible studies and encourage others in their faith
• Serve alongside their husbands in the ministries to which God calls them

Those who attend at least 80% of the classes and complete the assignments at an acceptable level are given credit for the course. At graduation, wives receive a certificate indicating the courses they have completed.

In addition, the spouses of full-time students are entitled to audit one of the regular courses (or the evening non-credit community course) per term at no charge. Finally, wives are encouraged to attend the two chapel periods each week, and the wives as a group are usually responsible for leading one chapel session each term.
